TxDOT Expansion Project on FM1463

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will be implementing road closures throughout the duration of this project. Notifications will be posted as they are received from TxDOT. Information provided below has been provided to the City of Fulshear from TxDOT.

SPECIAL SAFETY NOTE:

Recently we have noticed pedestrians, bicyclists, (electric) scooter drivers, using under-construction roadway sections to get to their destination. All ages, male and female.

We would ask that individuals, on foot, bicycle, motorized bike or scooter, plan their route to the extent he/she do not have to walk/drive behind barrier. It is enticing; these areas are wide and have no traffic. There is, however:

  • General construction debris – plastic, steel, concrete – blunt ends
  • Grade differences / elevation changes
  • Loose soil
  • At worse, a chance encounter with construction machinery

Thank you for your continued efforts and assistance as we improve FM 1463!

Future Work

  • January: begin placing new proposed northbound lane concrete from 1093 to Cinco Trace intersection - as of now, this work will occur at night
  • Late Q1/early Q2: traffic switch in the northern half of the roadway - Cane Island to north of Spring Green

Updates

Northern segment (I10 to Crossover)

  • Continued installation work for intelligent traffic control system
  • Continued drainage work along right side of proposed southbound lanes near Agave Estates
  • Continued “housekeeping” work in preparation for late January traffic switch
  • Late January switches:
    • Open 2+ southbound lanes north of Spring Green
    • Realign Cane Island intersection – “soften” the right turn eastbound and remove the transition
  • Continued excavation of permanent detention pond – northwest of Kingsland Blvd.
  • The final asphalt paving happening TONIGHT Friday 1/16 – continuous work until completion - from Nelson Way to I10 frontage road

Southern segment

  • Housekeeping along right side of proposed northbound lanes from South Fry to Cinco Ranch
  • Delivery and inspection of reinforcing steel for future northbound concrete main lanes from 1093 intersection to Westridge Creek Lane
  • Completing remaining approvals and procedures to begin nighttime northbound main lanes starting at FM 1093 and heading north to Corbitt Road
  • A roadway marking/striping crew will begin at Tamarron Parkway Saturday 1/17 and head south to FM 1093 adding new reflective yellow and white markers installed on the roadway surface – improved visibility / delineation

About this Project

The FM 1463 construction project from I-10 to FM 1093 is a $108 million widening of roadway from two lanes to four lanes in each direction. The work includes soil improvements, concrete pavement, improved intersections, upgraded storm sewer and waterlines for the City of Katy and the City of Fulshear. It also includes intelligent traffic monitoring systems, soundwalls in certain northern neighborhoods, and improved pedestrian access with wide sidewalks.

The project contractor is Zachary Construction and the project is being overseen by the Texas Department of Transportation Fort Bend Area Office.

Construction began in February 2022 and estimated time of completion is set for late 2026 (this date may be adjusted depending on project conditions) and will include traffic lane closures throughout the duration of the project.

The city will be sharing lane closure notifications as they are received from TxDOT. Residents are asked to be mindful of work crews, expect traffic delays, and when possible, avoid the area to prevent traffic congestion.

Work Zone Awareness

Work zones present a different and sometimes challenging environment for drivers to navigate. Motorists may encounter uneven pavement, narrow lanes, concrete barriers, slow-moving heavy equipment, and vehicles that make sudden stops.

  • Slow down. Follow the posted work zone speed limit and never drive faster than what is safe for road conditions.
  • Pay attention. Avoid distractions, keep your mind on the road and put your phone away.
  • Don’t tailgate. Give yourself room to stop in a hurry, should you need to. Rear-end collisions are the most common kind of work zone crashes.
  • Watch out for road crews. Roadside workers want to get home safely too. Always follow instructions and be mindful of construction area road signs.
  • Allow extra time. Road construction can slow things down. Count on it and plan for it.
