The City of Fulshear is committed to preserving the beauty of our night skies while ensuring safe and attractive neighborhoods. Recently, the City has observed an increase in outdoor lighting installations that do not meet local ordinance requirements.
This article is designed to help residents understand the rules, the reasons behind them, and how to stay compliant.
Why Lighting Regulations Exist
Fulshear’s lighting standards are aligned with national best practices, including guidance from the International Dark-Sky Association. These standards help:
- Reduce light pollution
- Improve nighttime visibility and safety
- Prevent light trespass onto neighboring properties
- Maintain the community’s aesthetic character
Common Violations We’re Seeing
- Fixtures that are not shielded and emit light upward
- Lighting that extends beyond rooflines or eaves
- Excessive brightness or glare affecting nearby homes
What the Code Requires
Section 8-40
Adopts building standards that regulate proper installation and fixture compliance.
Section 28-3-41 (Lighting Design):
- Lighting must be directed downward
- Fixtures should minimize glare
- Light should not extend above structural lines (roof/eaves)
How to Fix Non-Compliant Lighting
- Install fully shielded fixtures
- Adjust angles so light is directed downward
- Replace bulbs with lower-intensity options if needed
